Direct Care Shelter

Job Title: Direct Care Shelter Staff Member

Supervisor’s Title: Facilities Manager

General Summary: Ensure proper care and treatment of residents. Assist with orientation of newer residents and provide support of residents who have already been acclimated to Hope Harbor Shelter services. There is a particular emphasis placed upon ensuring the physical safety of the facility for residents, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Qualifications:

  • Pass a complete series of background checks

  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED, although an associate’s degree in Human Services or related field is preferred.

  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain these within thirty (30) days of being hired.

  • Be capable of accurately following written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively; orally, typed, and written.

  • Ability to be reliable and punctual

  • Ability to work with persons in need in a compassionate and dignified manner.

  • Ability to maintain, resident, staff, and volunteer confidentiality.

  • Ability to de-escalate situations that may arise between residents.

  • Must be able to work independently with a minimum amount of supervision.

General Skills:

  • General knowledge of human service operations and community services.

  • Knowledge of computers.

  • Skilled in written and oral communications.

  • Ability to plan, multi-task, and prioritize work.

  • Ability to maintain client, staff, and volunteer confidentiality.

  • Ability to perform general office duties.

  • Ability to lift and carry 20 lbs and navigate stairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Resident & Facility Safety

    • Monitor the sign in/out sheet as appropriate. Walk through the entire building once an hour to monitor the physical safety of the facility regarding danger including but not limited to unauthorized visitors; residents under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol; fires; maintenance concerns; violence; etc. Allow residents access to their prescription medications; noting this on Daily Activity Reports. Perform monthly safety drills for fire and weather emergencies. Perform monthly maintenance tasks with residents.

  • Assisting Shelter Residents

    • Assist with resident orientation to the program. This includes working alongside new residents to learn the process of chores, signing in, mealtimes, etc. Create and post community service opportunities and communicate regularly with shelter residents. In addition, shelter staff should be available to offer Peer Support to residents in need.

  • Donation Distribution

    • Receives, organizes, and distributes donations. Schedules surpluses pick up. Coordinates with donation volunteers. Coordinate with regular donors (produce, bread, etc.), and ensure there is space available to receive donations. Work with Service Coordinator to coordinate volunteers available to assist with donations.

  • Confidentiality

    • Ensure confidentiality of residents, staff, and volunteers.

  • Documentation

    • Complete documentation including incident reports, daily activity logs, etc. in an accurate and timely manner. Evaluate and document client daily chore completions. Responsible for tracking donations received daily and providing donation slips to the office.
