A Brief History of Hope Harbor…

1994

  • The Community Humanitarian Resource Center (CHRC) was officially incorporated with six founding members: William Holloway, Ronda Wagner, Pam Morris-Stump, Lauri Shultis, Filemon Sanchez, and Reverend Timothy Anderson.

  • In addition to offering hotel and motel vouchers, CHRC initiated a food and fuel voucher program to further support those in need.

1995

  • CHRC acquired a three-story home located at 120 W. 10th Street, Grand Island, to serve as the first family shelter.

1998

  • CHRC became a designated United Way Partner Agency.

2004

  • The organization officially changed its name to Hope Harbor.

2007

  • Hope Harbor relocated from its original 10th Street shelter to the former St. Mary’s Convent at 610 W. Division Street.

2010

  • Hope Harbor further enhanced its services by offering separate programs for emergency and transitional shelter clients. Life-skills classes were also introduced to help transitional shelter residents on their path to self-sufficiency.

2015

  • The organization launched the Hope Expanding Capital Campaign with the goal of purchasing and renovating an adjacent building to serve as a new service center. The campaign successfully raised over $1.9 million.

2016

  • Hope Harbor completed the renovation and officially opened its new Service Center, located at 615 W. 1st Street.

2017

  • Further shelter renovations were completed as part of the Hope Expanding project, increasing the capacity of both the Emergency and Transitional Shelters.

2019

  • Hope Harbor proudly celebrated 25 years of dedicated service to the Grand Island community.

2023

  • Hope Harbor purchases the land adjacent to the Shelter and Service Center, expanding the campus to a full city block.

2024

  • Hope Harbor is awarding a $4.7 million grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development through the HOME American Rescue Plan.
